On various occasions, bowlers have changed the course of the match in just one spell, even in an over at some occasions. This article relives the memories of spells in the Indian Premier League (IPL) that turned the game in their team’s favor.

The Deccan Chargers had set a small target of 130 runs in 20 overs for Kochi Tuskers Kerala, and they dismissed them with 74 as Ishant Sharma displayed extraordinary bowling skills at Nehru Stadium, Kochi in 2011.

6) Lasith Malinga – 5/14
Sri Lankan bowling great Lasith Malinga was a world-class bowler, and one of the most successful ones at the Indian Premier League. He was an expert at toe-crushing yorkers, slow in-dipping yorkers and back-of-the-hand slower ones were unreadable for even the greatest of batsmen.
Malinga’s first spell of bowling at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi in 2011 helped MI restrict Delhi Daredevils at a low score of 95, taking five wickets for 14 runs over 3.1 overs. This is an example of how effective he was, as his team won by 8 wickets.

7) Ankit Rajput – 5/14
Ankit came to the KingsXI Punjab team in 2018 as a mystery bowler, although his performances with the ball have been lackluster. But against Sunrisers Hyderabad, he produced one of those “special” spells, where everything clicked for him. Batters were baffled as bowled unplayable deliveries and sent them back to the pavilion one after another.
Ankit gave 14 runs and took five crucial wickets to help his team stand firm with a note spell. He knocked down the top-order batters in Sunrisers Hyderabad, who otherwise could have clinched the victory in a few overs. The ball hitting those sweet spots consistently at Rajiv Gandhi Intl. Cricket Stadium, Hyderabad, made this exceptional spell from Ankit.

One great example was his spell of 5/17 against Deccan chargers during the first edition.
Mishra bowled four overs with daunting confidence. He gave 17 runs and took five wickets in it for good measure, including his first-ever hat trick in the IPL.

10) James Faulkner – 5/20
The now-forgotten Australian all-rounder James Faulkner once remained the talk of the town for years. Not only was he destructive with the bat, his back-of-the-hand slower once, and leg-cutters were very difficult to read. His ability to swing the new ball and bowl economically over at the death made him a very handy tool for every team he represented over the years.
James Faulkner’s performance was impressive against the Sunrisers Hyderabad at Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur, in 2013. In that game, he took five wickets in all and also sent a well-settled Darren Sammy for 60 off just 40 balls. He managed to concede 16 runs for his quota, which helped his side take down a dangerous opposition batting lineup.
