The Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2021 finalists, Peshawar Zalmi will take on the 2019 champions, Quetta Gladiators in the second match of the PSL 2022 on Friday, January 28.

The match, scheduled at Karachi’s National Stadium, will start at 7 pm PST.

This will be an important face-off for Quetta Gladiators, as they would look to kick off the tournament on a winning note after consecutive failures in the last two seasons. A win against the finalists of the last season will definitely work as a booster shot for Sarfaraz-led men.

Like many other franchises, the Gladiators have undergone an overhaul, and have inducted the missing firepower, and the depth in batting and bowling departments to look good on paper. They, led by aggressive captain, Sarfaraz, have better chances of turning their fortune around this year.

If we take a look at their squad, Quetta have strengthened their batting lineup with the induction of Ben Dunk, Iftikhar Ahmed, Dan Lawrence, Shimron Hetmyr, James Vince, and Jason Roy. Then, they have a senior in Sohail Tanveer to lead the pace attack that includes Mohammad Hasnain, and Naseem Shah.

Then they have James Faulkner and Shahid Afridi to strengthen the all-rounder’s department. The spin department, on the other hand, looks well-settled with the presence of tried-and-tested Mohammad Nawaz, and the newcomer, Noor Ahmed.

On paper, Sarfaraz and company have all basis covered. However, it will be important for them to go out and execute the plans on the field – something that they failed in during the previous two seasons.

Peshawar, on the flip side, are one of the most disturbed franchises due to the Covid-19 at this moment. Five of their key players, including skipper, Wahab Riaz, openers Hazratullah Zazai, Kamran Akmal and top-order batter, Haider Ali are down with the Covid-19. While the skipper might recover before and rejoin the side after tomorrow’s encounter, the other players are most likely to miss at least three next matches against Quetta, Islamabad United and Lahore Qalandars.

In Wahab’s absence, senior pro, Shoaib Malik is expected to lead the side tomorrow against Gladiators. Despite the absence of their main players, Zalmi still have the likes of Tom Kohler-Cadmore, Sherfane Ratherford, Mat Parkinson, and Ben Cutting to rely on. From domestic recruits, they still have the services of Malik, wicketkeeper-batter, Mohammad Haris, all-rounder Salman Irshad, fast bowlers Samin Gul, and Sohail Khan at their disposal.
