Jasprit Bumrah will be India’s 36th Test captain as he is set to lead the Men in Blue against the team’s rescheduled 5th Test against England to be held at Edgbaston. This was after it was confirmed that team captain Rohit Sharma won’t be taking part in the match after having tested positive for COVID-19.
After he was named as the captain for the said upcoming match, wicketkeeper-batsman Rishab Pant was also named as his deputy. This was shortly after he led the team in the recently-concluded T20I series against South Africa.

Rohit Sharma’s status
An official statement from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said that Rohit Sharma is ruled out of the rescheduled fifth Test match. This was after he underwent a rapid antigen test on Thursday morning which later gave a positive result for COVID-19.
Originally, the management was willing to wait for him to produce a negative test result a day before the game. Specifically, he has already contributed 368 runs, including a century in the fourth Test.
Bumrah’s appointment as captain
The management was quick enough to pick Bumrah to replace Sharma for the said match. Talking about his new task, Bumrah shared in an interview how he felt about it. He said, ‘It is a big achievement, big honour. It was my dream to play Test cricket. It is a big achievement that I have gotten the honour to lead the country. It is the biggest achievement of my career. I am very happy’.
This is the first time that Bumrah will be assigned to a captaincy post for any format. This makes him the first fast bowler to lead India after the legendary Kapil Dev. Aside from that, this assignment also makes him the second captain of the ongoing Test series, thus taking after Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
The reason why he has been appointed to the post was that he has also been an outstanding player for the team during the series. Part of his record was when he registered figures of 5/64 at Nottingham, 4/46 at Trent Bridge, 3/33 at Lord’s, and 2/67 and 2/27 at the Oval.
Should India manage to win the Test or have it end in a draw, it will be their first Test series victory in England since 2007. Aside from that, this Test match series is also crucial for the team since it will help determine their standing at the ICC World Test Championship since they are currently ranked third.
